Who was cadmus?

Cadmus was a legendary figure in Greek mythology who is credited with founding the city of Thebes. According to the myth, Cadmus was the son of the Phoenician king Agenor and was tasked with finding his sister Europa who had been abducted by Zeus. During his search, Cadmus consulted the Oracle of Delphi and was advised to abandon his quest and instead follow a cow until it lay down, and then establish a city at that spot. Cadmus did as he was told and founded the city of Thebes. He is also known for sowing dragon's teeth into the ground, which grew into fully-armed soldiers who fought each other until only five remained. These soldiers became the ancestors of the Theban nobility. Cadmus is important in literature as his story has been told and retold in various forms, including in the works of the ancient Greek poets Hesiod and Ovid, and in modern literature, such as the poem "The Waste Land" by T.S. Eliot.
